Microneedling

What is microneedling?

This is a skin rejuvenating procedure where multiple tiny needles are rolled across the skin to induce collagen production. It is used in skin rejuvenation, acne scarring, pigmentation as well as improving the texture of your skin and reduce your pore size.

Devices vary from older fixed needle rollers to the electric powered pen style devices with disposable sterile tips. There are variations in needle length, quantity of needles, quantity, configuration and material. The number of microneedling devices on the market is huge making the decision for the consumer difficult.

However the treatment results are ultimately dependent on the operator who should be properly trained rather than on the actual device.

Our practice use electric-powered Dermapen 4 which has 16 disposable needle tips, adjustable speeds and depths of penetration from 1.0 to 3.0mm.

Anti-ageing
Microneedling induces new collagen and elastin production making your skin look brighter, tighter and more even toned. It will also reduce the large pores on the face.

Scars
Dermapen 4 is the only microneedling device with a dedicated setting for scarring such as post-acne scarring, stretch marks, burn scars and contractures.

Microneedling can be done on face, neck, hands and on other area such as hips.

Pigmentation
Microneedling has also been used in hyperpigmentation and vitiligo. Unlike lasers it does not produce heat and can be used on darker skin types without the risk of increased pigmentation. By selecting finer needles and reducing the depth of the needles pigmentation can be treated.

If the pigmentation is in the epidermis it is easier to remove with microneedling. If it is deeper such as in the dermis often other devices such as out Cutera Enlighten as well as topical treatment as necessary. Oral treatments given by the dermatologists may also be needed to remove the stubborn pigmentation.

Does it work?
How many sessions do you need to see results?
The outcome and number of sessions to achieve a good result varies from patient to patient. Generally the microneedling sessions are recommended every 2-4 weeks until the desired clinical results are achieved. Patients often see a result after the third treatment and this is due to collagen induction.
